I watched various news and news commentaries this week. I was impressed. I was touched by how clumsy and ineffective we humans are. One can peer back through the pages of history and see it over and over again. We are at heart inept. No matter what we build, how marvelously crafted it may seem, how greatly we strive, how big we dream, eventually everything falls to pieces around us. The world order is chaotic. Our marvelous USA is crumbling around us into Lawlessness. So sad! But, there's more to it than just that. "We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one" (1 John 5:19).
Somehow, and for some greater reason, God has given temporary authority over the earth to the evil one, who even felt able to offer it conditionally to Jesus: "And the devil said to Him, 'I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish' " (Luke 4:6). What a mystery! And Jesus refused it. (Consider the implications of that!) We Christians dwell here in this oh-so-very-modern world, blasphemously busy, unholy and uncaring, and so very, very self-centered---knowing ultimately that God is in charge of the pathway of history, but for now, we can only live for Him as best we understand. But, it is so sad to watch our fellow, non-Christian humans scurry about woefully oblivious to spiritual matters.
History seems to be promising us a newer bout of conflict between Islam and the Judeo-Christian crowd. I can't help but wonder at the great warfare that seems just a short time away. Yet, I watch Americans caught up in their own daily wants and goals and mindless distractions, seemingly blind to the potential cataclysm ahead. The American Dream has become simply a narcissistic falsehood. I see the Christian value system collapsing. Lying, infidelity, phoniness, cultural bullying---all these seem to rule. Most folks have simply accepted these as the new way of life. So, now, the newest Pope searches for global harmony and peace by proclaiming that everyone regardless of their religious affiliation worships the same God. False teaching. Anti-Christian. Such horrendous lying that repudiates the Godship of Jesus Christ! God must surely shed tears!
Having said all of this, I still feel an idealistic/absolutist river roaming quietly and furtively about in my psyche that hopes in the true sense of Hope that God will remain merciful for a while longer. "When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts" (Acts 11:23). Some evidence of grace does remain. God forgive me. God forgive us all.
